We are know that the French have very discerning palates. For decades we have enjoyed the marvelous cuisine that has come from this wonderful land. We have enjoyed the fine wines that for centuries the French have produced. In more recent times French beer too has made its mark on the world and I for one really do enjoy a glass of very cold beer on a very hot afternoon. I am very fond of a drink they call ‘panache’ which is beer or lager mixed with fizzy lemonade, it is not only a really nice drink but extremely refreshing too.
There are many French beers and one which has become very popular over recent times is called Desperados. This pale lager is produced by the Brasserie Fischer which is based in Alsace and is one of the oldest breweries in France. Desperados is an extraordinary lager that has a hint of Tequila flavor in it. Yet another one that many people really enjoy is Adelscott which is made with peat-smoked malt, I have to say that my husband really does like this particular beer and always brings a case back home with him after a trip over to France.
Another of my favorites is a French lager that is made with bilberries as well as malt and hops. Fruit beers and lagers are very popular in France and although rather sweet, they are occasionally really refreshingly nice on a nice sunny day. There are lagers made out of most fruits and even one made with chestnuts which is called Bourganel aux Marrons. This lager also has a hint of vanilla in it on top of the malt, hops and chestnut purée, making it a rather acquired taste. For stronger lagers then the French have some really good ones too and these include some really nice ones like Biere du Desert and Biere du Demon, which is aptly named as it is 12% proof making it one of the stronger ones available in France.
Whenever we go skiing in Serre Chevalier, one of the things we love to do is sit on a terrace of a restaurant in the sunshine and have a really cold glass of fruit beer.

For me there is no better way than to end a days skiing than to watch the world go by with a cold glass of beer that is rich and fruity.
Many people travel to France and sample these great beers and lagers, with a lot of them filling the boots of their cars with cases of their favorite French beers to bring back home with them. I know that every time we travel to France by car, we always come back with our favorite local produce, wines, spirits as well as a case or two of beer and with Christmas just around the corner, we are planning our next short break over to France so that we can stock up on a few wonderful supplies in readiness for this years festive season.
