Ken’s comments…

“If you like a true Doppelbock, heavy on the lager yeast and sweet malt, then this is the beer for you. Dark with garnet/ruby highlights with great clarity, malt sweetness up front with just the right light carbonation this beer should be respected, style-wise. The head is more bubble than ‘foam’ despite at least one reviewer’s comments at Beer Advocate, and we didn’t notice that many ‘legs’ to the pour. It also has a nice toasty; darker malt, ‘nose.'” Little hop sense, as per style.

“It should be noted that personally I don’t like this much lager-yeast sense to my beer. What many call ‘clean’ to me tastes a tad sulfuric and in this case a bit too astringent. But that’s probably just me. I guess that’s why I prefer ales.”

From Millie’s notes…

Strong maltiness noted to the aroma, with slight sense of fruit: raisin. Dark brown; ruby highlights with large, persistent head: to style. The flavor is rich and malty. There’s a slight prune-plum sense. Toasty caramel notes as it warms with more raisins. Tends to cling to roof of mouth making it just a bit motor oil-ish. This may be because it’s a lager. Smooth warming, yet strong, alcohol presence.

Excellent example of style. Strong and rich.
