MEADVILLE, Pa. — The largest agricultural county fair in
Pennsylvania will judge home-brewed beer for the first time in its 66-year history.
The Crawford County Fair Board voted 7-2 on Thursday to add beer to the roster of food and beverages judged at the fair. The fair began judging homemade wines in the mid-1990s.
Fair board member John Lasko opposed the move telling the Meadville Tribune it sets a bad precedent for a “family fair.”
Alcohol can’t be sold or consumed on the fairgrounds, so the beer will be judged off-site and only displayed at the fair. The wine judging is handled the same way.
Six categories will be judged: light ale, amber ale, dark ale, light lager, dark lager, and specialty brews.
This year’s fair runs Aug. 20 to 27.
