Full Sail Brewing Wassail

Written by Peter Genovese for The Star-Ledger

The label on Full Sail’s Wassail says it’s “concocted by our massive brewforce of 47.”

Like that part.

The label describes it as “a ridiculously tasty winter ale.”

Not so fast.

This winter warmer (7% ABV) from the Hood River, Ore.-based “specialists in the liquid refreshment arts since 1987” pours a deep coppery brown.

Aroma? Not as bold or distinct as you’d might expect; there’s a hint of spice (nutmeg, maybe cinnamon), plus citrus and vanilla.

Taste: mildly spicy, dried-fruity, kind of hoppy, finishing very dry, maybe too dry, like a beer mouthwash.

It’s not as spicy or forward as other winter warmers you may know; it’s for those who prefer a lone smoking log on the fire rather than a dialed-on-high electric blanket to bring the heat.

I’m not saying I don’t like it: I’m just saying I’d choose Full Sail’s Wreck the Halls over Wassail as a winter warmer.
