Who’s UP for a Beer with Viagra?

Say this for the Scottish beer maker BrewDog: These guys know how to attract attention.

Last summer BrewDog released a 55-percent-alcohol-by-volume Belgian ale called The End of History. But the extreme alcohol content wasn’t the absurd part. The absurd part was that the bottles were sold inside dead squirrels. For $765 a pop. BrewDog also sells a 41 percent ABV India pale called Sink the Bismarck. I saw a bottle on the shelf at Julio’s Liquors in Westborough last week, priced around $150. (Apparently the beer is nothing special; the users of BeerAdvocate collectively rate it only a B.)

How to top these beers?

BrewDog has just released a beer brewed with Viagra. Royal Virility Performance — timed to coincide with the buzz surrounding the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton — is actual kind of a normal beer, aside from the Viagra part; it’s a 7.5 percent ABV India pale ale. The Viagra, however, drives up the price; the beer is priced at 10 pounds ($16.55) per 12-ounce bottle.

“With this beer we want to take the wheels off the royal wedding bandwagon being jumped on by dozens of breweries,” BrewDog says on its website. “The Royal Virility Performance is the perfect antidote to all the hype.”

Antidote to the hype? Hmm.

Alas, don’t go looking for this one at your local liquor store. It won’t likely make its way to our shores. BrewDog is selling Royal Virility Performance only in the United Kingdom and only via its website, BrewDog.com.
